Whether you have children in school or not you will no doubt encounter increased pedestrian and school bus traffic along area roadways. The helpful information below will remind you of the importance of staying alert when driving.
WHEN DRIVING
1. Be alert for children on or near the roadway.
2. Be aware of School Zones. Reduced speed limits usually apply.
3. When a School Bus is loading and/or unloading:
- Come to a complete stop when a bus displays its stop sign and flashing lights. You must stop no matter which direction you are traveling. On divided highways or roadways withfourlanes, stop only when traveling in the same direction of the school bus.
- With three lane roadways, like Clayton Road east of Mason, motorists must stop for school buses in BOTH DIRECTIONS when the stop arm is extended.
- Motorists may NOT use the center turn lane to pass buses with stop arms extended.
- Proceed only when the bus has started moving or when the driver signals for you to proceed. Before proceeding, be sure all the children are safely on the sidewalk or shoulder of the roadway.
4. Watch for suspicious activity at bus stops. lf something or someone appears to be suspicious it probably is. Call 911 without delay. Remember, it only takes a few seconds to abduct a child. |

Are you prepared for a disaster? No doubt it crosses your mind from time to time, particularly when you are awakened by an earthquake! Recent local and global events should not be ignored. We have been witness to earthquakes, tornadoes and flooding, all within our region. Throughout the world, deadly events continue to remind us of the importance of becoming more aware and better prepared. Regardless of the event, disasters share commonalities, such as increased need for resources, decreased availability of services, economic burden, loss of property and loss of life. As public safety providers, we know first hand that disasters strike when they are least expected and we must remain in a state of readiness. Community preparedness is essential to our emergency planning, so we are taking the initiative to encourage individual and family disaster planning and preparedness within our community. We are the leaders in this area and as such, the West County EMS & Fire Protection District has developed a program to assist you with your disaster preparation and offer guidance to help you remain prepared.
